  • Activities days

    Published 04/07/19

It has been a very busy time in school with the summer term Activities Days taking place.   Ninety very excited year 7 students spent four days in France at Chateau du Tertre in Normandy, taking part in a wide range of activities and visiting a local town, the D Day beaches and the beautiful Mont St Michel.  This year so many Year 8 students wanted to go on the Holland trip that we had to put on another trip just for them, so in the end a hundred and fifty year 8s and seventeen staff made the journey to Amsterdam in two parallel trips which took in a range of cultural and tourist sites.

Back in the UK we had a range of activities taking place across the whole school which included maths puzzle days, ‘healthy schools’ education for year 10 and a thought provoking ‘personal empowerment and advocacy’ day for year 9.  Day trips also went out to Dinton Activity Centre, Marwell Zoo, Thorpe Park and, for the GCSE Art students, an inspiring visit to Kew Gardens to support their portfolio work.   Year 12 students were busy looking to the future and attended workshops to support them with their forthcoming university applications.

We were also delighted to welcome thirteen students and two teachers from our partner school in IES Las Canteras in Spain.  This was the return visit following our successful trip out to Spain in March and it was great to involve the Spanish students in our activities.

  • Summer concert 2019

    Published 04/07/19

We recently had the pleasure of the Music Department’s Summer Concert, a very enjoyable evening which showcased talent from across the school.  A wide range of instruments and musical styles were on offer with several groups being led and conducted by the students themselves.  This concert was also the first opportunity for us to hear the grand piano which has been so kindly donated to the school by a local Wargrave resident.  The piano students were keen to try it out and it sounded wonderful.

  • Danish Teacher Visit

    Published 04/04/19

We were very pleased to recently host three Danish trainee teachers at our school. The trainee teachers visited the school for a week in March and were able to experience the differences between teacher training here in the UK and in Denmark.

The group were able to take part in training sessions with our current PGCE trainees, spend time in a number of our departments, work with our LSA team as well as making a visit to Charvil Primary. It is hoped that this visit is the first event in a series of teacher exchanges, with some Piggott staff hopefully making a return trip to Denmark in the next academic year. The exchange project was established through our links with Reading University, who themselves have close links to a teacher training provider in Hjørring, Northern Denmark.

One of the visiting trainees, Lotte Engelhard Jensen, explained that: ’I would like to say thank you for a wonderful and educational week. We have enjoyed every bit of it very much and we appreciate everything (The Piggott School) have done for us!’.

Similar projects involving undergraduate trainees from STEM subjects at Reading University are planned for later this academic year. We will also be welcoming more students into our school over the next year by way of the ‘Students in Schools’ project – giving undergraduates the chance to explore the different possibilities within the teaching profession.

  • Remembrance Events 2018

    Published 08/11/18

Our annual Remembrance Service will take place in the main hall on Friday 9 November at 2.30pm.   We look forward to being joined by members of the Royal British Legion and other guests.

In this special year, members of the school choir who contributed to the Never Such Innocence project in January are excited to have been invited to attend the National Service of Thanksgiving to mark the Centenary of the Armistice at Westminster Abbey this Sunday, 11 November.  The Service will be broadcast live on BBC 1 at 6pm – you may well see us in the audience, looking smart in Piggott uniform.

As part of The Piggott School’s commemorations to mark the centenary of the Armistice we are also proud to unveil the 6 foot tall ‘Silent Tommy’ who represents the many thousands of young men who made the ultimate sacrifice while fighting for their country.  He will take pride of place in the school quad where he will look in towards the roll of honour, which lists the names of members of our school who were among the many fallen heroes.

In addition, every student and staff member has been given the opportunity to fill out a small outline of ‘Tommy’ with either the name of someone they wish to thank, or with a poem or a piece of art work. These have been gathered in a display that will sit alongside the roll of honour and our ‘Silent Tommy.’ We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this display.

    ‘Lest we forget’.
